What is the sand ceremony? One of the hottest wedding trends is the sand ceremony (thanks to Trista and Ryan). Everyone seems to have a different take on the presentation of the sand ceremony. People have also mistaken the sand ceremony as a Hawaiian tradition (rather, it has Native American origins). We think you should use this information as a resource, and personalize it so that it reflects you as a couple.

The sand ceremony is basically a nonreligious way to unify the couple instead of lighting a unity candle. The sand ceremony symbolizes the unity of the bride and groom and/or the joining of their families. The couple provides two small vials of sand (some use colored sand) to represent each person's separate lives. The groom and bride each take turns pouring his and her sand into the main jar to represent them becoming one. You can get creative with the colors of sand as well as the vials used to pour the sand. Some of our couples have used coconut shells to pour the sand into the jar or bottle, which is then used as a keepsake. We recommend sealing the top of the jar or bottle with wax. It can be symbolic to have your parents melt the wax on the top to seal the sand in the jar.

The timing of the ceremony varies, but most commonly occurs before or after the vow exchange.

There are some ways to vary the ceremony. For example, if you have children, you may want to include them in the ceremony, as well.

Remember to tell your wedding planner that you are doing the sand ceremony during your ceremony so the table can be set up for you. The wedding planner will also communicate this information to the officiant, photographer, and videographer. You will need to provide the materials necessary to have this as part of your ceremony.

"To symbolize the importance of the individuals within the marriage and the joining of two lives into one entity, 3 colors of sand will now be layered into a base."

(Trista is handed a clear jar of Pink Sand, Ryan is handed a clear jar of Blue Sand. The minister has one small clear jar filled with a Neutral color sand and a large empty jar)

The Minister speaks again:
"We begin with a layer of Neutral Sand which symbolizes that the marriage is grounded."
(The Minister pours a little of the Neutral Sand into the large jar)
"Then we layer the individual colors. This symbolizes that the marriage is based on the strength of the individuals."

(Ryan poured a little of the Blue Sand in first, followed by a little more of the Neutral Sand from the minister. Trista then added a little of the Pink Sand, followed by some additional Neutral Sand from the minister).

When Trista and Ryan were married, they used the following wording:
"And now we combine the colors, which symbolizes two lives joined as one together forever."
(Ryan and Trista simultaneously pour their remaining sand into the large jar until their jars are empty. The minister caps off the sand with the last of the Neutral Sand. The minister then holds the large jar up as if presenting to the wedding audience and places the jar to the side)

Renting a photo booth for the wedding reception is a growing trend in the industry. Not only is it a fun and creative way to capture memories with your friends and family, but the photos make a fantastic favor for your guests! Many photo booth companies provide props, too, so the photos are fun and original.

The photo booths of today are not like the ones we used decades ago at the mall and arcades. These are high tech photo booths, and many companies provide you with a CD of all of the photos taken throughout the evening.

Not everyone will do silly poses for the professional photographer, but they will feel comfortable enough to do it in the photo booth. Do I Want a Vintage or Digital Booth?
Vintage
-Some folks like the classic look and feel of a vintage photo booth. If you are looking to invoke nostalgia, a vintage booth is perfect for you. Their old school look and feel will remind you and your guests of days when these were a common site. One drawback is that they are bulky and are limited in where they can be placed. They also tend to cost somewhere in the range of $1500-$2000+ for an event. However, if you love the idea of having a classic booth and those unforgettable photo strips, then this is for you.

Digital
-For others who don't have their hearts set on the classic look, a digital booth may be the answer. Digital booths have the advantage of being light weight and highly mobile, and thus are cheaper, usually ranging from $1000-$1200 for an event. Additionally, these booths can create high resolution photos and can fit 8-10 people, sometimes more. If you are looking for something with a little more bang for your buck, and are willing to spare the vintage look for a more modern curtained booth design, then a digital booth may be right for you.

What to Look for in a Photo Booth Company?

Photo Resolution
-You want to make sure that the booth you choose provides high photo resolution. This will ensure the clearest, sharpest pictures. Some companies may try to charge you extra for "high resolution" photos, but there are many companies out there that provide the same resolution or better, at no greater cost.

Booth Size
-Most classic booths are a little smaller inside than digital booths. Make sure you ask your classic booth provider how many people fit inside before booking with them. Typically, it's 2-4 people at a time. Digital booths have a little greater range. These booths can fit anywhere from 4 or 5, all the way to 15 people in some cases. A bigger booth usually means more money, but once again, some companies provide large booths at no greater cost than other's small booths.

Photo Archive
-Some Vintage and most Digital photo booth companies will provide you with a CD of all your event's photos. You can take this and copy it, print the pictures out, and share at will. This is a great benefit if your chosen company provides this service. Some companies take it a step further and offer online password-protected galleries. You and your guests can log into the gallery with your chosen password and view all your wedding images. You will all be able to share, save, and print these pictures for usually 2-3 months after your event.

Choosing the right photo booth for your wedding is a delicate process. You want someone you can trust, but you also want to make sure the photo booth you rent meets your desires. There are a few things to look for when choosing a photo booth company:

Most companies will offer double prints with this option and your guests can take the doubles of their pictures and add them to your book with a memorable note. This is a great way to create a special keepsake from you wedding.

There are a variety of items you can distribute to your guests as favors. Some suggestions are traditional, and some are more creative. We hope you will find this extensive list helpful.

Consumable Favors:Many couples are hosting a candy buffet made available to their guests at the reception. The couples also provide carry-out bags or boxes (the mini Chinese takeout boxes are so cute for this!) so guests can take some treats with them.

Sand pail candles or place card holders
A small tin or terracotta planter, either plain or painted, with a plant or without. You can fill it with candy, as well. You can also paint the name of the guest on the side of the pot, the table name or number on the bottom, your names and the wedding date.
For a December wedding you may want to give your guests glass ornaments with the name of the guest painted on each. You can also paint your names and the wedding date. This is very inexpensive, as plain glass ornaments are usually under $1.00 each.
Beach Themed candles such as pineapple candles, coconut candles, seashell candles, etc.
16 ounce plastic coconut cups or pineapple cups. You can personalize these by writing the name of your guest on each, as well as the table name or number on the bottom. You can also write your names and the wedding date. The catalog “Oriental Trading Company” sells these. There is a hole for a straw. These can also be used at the wedding. The guests can have the bartenders fill them with the drinks they order.
Personalized glassware/stemware
Drink Stemware charms are the perfect substitute for a place card that doubles as a wedding favor. You can even get these in your wedding colors!
Plastic sun visors. The catalog “Oriental Trading Company” sells these by the dozen. They come in assorted colors, and have a foam lining. You can write the name of your guest, your names and the wedding date.
Wine Stoppers (you can even find these in your theme design, such as seashells)
Beach towels. These can be relatively inexpensive when bought at wholesale places, such as Costco. You can have them embroidered with your names and the wedding date, as well as a picture logo.
Outdoor weddings can start out warm but turn into a chilly evening. This bride provided guests with pashminas in her wedding color theme.
Votive candles and holders. These can be personalized and used as table décor/place holders/favors. Very multifunctional.
Potpourri sachets. You can buy these ready-made, or you can put them together yourself. If you want to have your wedding information on it, you can tie a personalized ribbon with your names and wedding date imprinted on it.
Seed packet place cards. Buy packets of flower or vegetable seeds. You can make labels on your computer with your wedding information and guest information on them, then place each label on each packet.
Miniature picture frames. You can put a picture of you as a couple in it, or you can put a sheet of paper with the guest name and table assignment in it. These cost approximately $6.00 each.
A scrolled parchment scroll with a poem thanking your guests for attending written on it.
Little plastic champagne or wine bottles filled with bubble bath. Some are even filled with cider. The label of the bottle is personalized with your names and the wedding date. A few companies provide these, including 619-273-5695 and 800-752-2505.
A floral or kukui nut shell lei.

Types of Bouquets

When planning your wedding, the flowers are a very important consideration. They affect the look of your photos, they reflect your wedding's theme and ambiance, and they affect your budget. The many terms and styles can become confusing since the options have dramatically increased. This page can be used as your guide to selecting the appropriate arrangements for you and your bridal party.

Arm or Presentation Bouquet: Also known as the pageant bouquet, feature a gathering of long-stemmed flowers cradled in the bride's arms across the inner bend of the elbow. A ribbon or bow is generally used to keep the bouquet together. Popular floral choices for arm bouquets include calla lilies, gladiolus, orchids, long-stemmed roses, delphiniums, and larkspur.

Ballerina Bouquet: A round bouquet composed of masses of tulle or net and few flowers.

Biedermeier Bouquet: Similar to the nosegay, this European-influenced bouquet of tightly arranged blossoms. The blossoms are arranged in concentric circles of various differently colored flowers. The blooms are wired into a holder, with one flower variety per ring.

Book Bouquet: A small prayer book or bible used as the platform upon which a small bouquet is placed. The design may be composed of a small cluster of flowers or may be featured as a small cascade. Generally flowers are attached with ribbon or a small armature to prevent damage to the book.

Cascade and Teardrop Bouquets: Sometimes called a teardrop, fountain, or waterfall bouquet, this sophisticated and elongated style features fullness and an abundance of blossoms at the top of the bouquet then tapers downwards with flowing foliage, floral streamers, or ribbons at the bottom. This bouquet can be designed very dense with flowers and foliage or can be more loosely arranged for an "airy" or "wispy" look.

Composite Bouquet: A handmade creation in which different petals or buds are wired together on a single stem to create the illusion of a giant flower. The focal area is a large flower that has been created by assembling together detached petals from numerous flowers.

Crescent Bouquet: A dramatic bouquet of arching flowers and foliage that extend from the center of the bouquet and can be designed to project a traditional or contemporary look. Flowers can arch from either left to right or right to left depending on preference. There are two types of crescent bouquets, symmetrical and asymmetrical. A symmetrical crescent features a balanced look with arched blossoms and foliage of the same length on both sides. An asymmetrical crescent features arched blossoms and foliage of different lengths so that one side of the bouquet is longer than the other.

Fan Bouquet: A small bouquet or cluster of flowers attached to an elaborate fan.

Freeform / Contemporary Bouquet: As the name implies, this style bouquet often has flowers or greenery coming out at various angles with no specific, recognizable shape. Freeform and contemporary bouquets are most often designed with tropical flowers and foliage that have unique shapes.

Hand Tied Bouquet: Generally round in shape, hand tied styles are also referred to as clutch bouquets, Martha bouquets, and French bouquets. This type of bouquet consists of a simple gathering of flowers, which is bound and tied with ribbon with stems left exposed.

Heart Bouquet: A romantic, alternative shape bouquet featuring two full arched shapes at the top while tapering down to a point at the bottom of the bouquet. Typically the traditional shape, often seen at Valentine's Day, symbolizing love and romance.

Nosegay Bouquet: A small, round-shaped, cluster of flowers that is typically less dense than traditional round bouquets. Nosegays often include more greenery, ribbon streamers, and are wired or tied together, or are placed in a holder.

Oval Bouquet: This bouquet is a combination of both a cascade and a round. It is elongated in shape, but features rounded shapes on both the top and bottom. Generally the bottom is narrower than the top, but the overall shape resembles an oval.

Pomander Bouquet: A flower or foliage covered ball or cone suspended from a loop of ribbon.

Round Bouquet: Simple, elegant, traditional bouquet that is suitable for both formal and informal weddings. Sometimes called a "colonial bouquet," this type of bouquet does not have to be perfectly round in shape and can be designed as a tight cluster for a denser look, or loosely arranged for a more "airy" feel.

Single Stem Bouquet: Single stem designs generally feature a unique design element, such as an intricately wrapped stem (for a long-stemmed flower), elaborate bow, streamers, or a decorative lace bloom collar (for a shorter stemmed flower) to give the design more interest and appeal.

Basket Bouquet: Flowers arranged and carried in a shallow basket and often used in a garden or garden-like wedding setting. Most often carried by young attendants (flower girls and junior bridesmaids).

Wreath or Hoop Bouquet: This "bouquet" is a large ring decorated or intertwined with foliage and flowers. Generally thought of as a symbol of eternity with no beginning or end.

Wrist Bouquet: Technically more of a corsage than a bouquet, this style is comprised of a small floral arrangement worn on the wrist. Flowers and foliage are mounted on a small base that is attached to a strong elastic bracelet that fits around the wrist.

First, you may want to consider when you want to travel to Hawaii. Some like to travel during the high season, which is the most expensive and the busiest time to travel to and stay in Hawaii. The high season generally runs from mid-December through March or mid-April, and the last two weeks of December. The best travel bargains are during the off-seasons, spring (mid-Apr to mid-June) and fall (Sept to mid-Dec). Fortunately, that is also when the best weather occurs. If you're looking to save money, or if you just want to avoid the crowds, this is the time to visit. Hotel rates and airfares also tend to be lower. Although summer used to be the off-season, large number of families traveling in summer (June-Aug), have made it a more popular time to go. So, you may not get the fantastic bargains of spring and fall.

It is pretty difficult to go wrong with selecting any of these islands, as they are all beautiful. Each island offers unique qualities, and we suggest you research them a little bit before making a decision. Here is some basic information to start your research...

OAHU

The liveliest island is Oahu. It is relatively small in size, although very populated. Honolulu is the most metropolitan of all the Hawaiian cities, offering beautiful beaches, an array of entertainment locales, and various accommodations. For a quieter setting on Oahu, we sugest the windward side or the north shore. There is ample transportation available if you choose to not rent a car. HAWAII...The Big Island

Frommer's says:

The Big Island of Hawaii--the island that lends its name to the entire 1,500-mile (2,415km) long Hawaiian archipelago--is where Mother Nature pulled out all the stops. Simply put, it's spectacular.

The Big Island has it all: fiery volcanoes and sparkling waterfalls, black-lava deserts and snowcapped mountain peaks, tropical rain forests and alpine meadows, a glacial lake and miles of golden, black, and green(!) sand beaches. The Big Island has an unmatched diversity of terrain and climate. A 50-mile (81km) drive will take you from snowy winter to sultry summer, passing through spring or fall along the way. The island looks like the inside of a barbecue pit on one side, and a lush jungle on the other.

The Big Island is the largest island in the Hawaiian chain (4,038 sq. miles--about the size of Connecticut), the youngest (800,000 years), and the least populated (with 30 people per sq. mile). It has the nation's wettest city, the southernmost point in the United States, the world's biggest telescope, the ocean's biggest trophy marlin, and America's greatest collection of tropical luxury resorts. It also has the highest peaks in the Pacific, the most volcanoes of any Hawaiian island, and the newest land on earth.

Five volcanoes--one still erupting--have created this continental island, which is growing bigger daily. At its heart is snowcapped Mauna Kea, the world's tallest sea mountain (measured from the ocean floor), complete with its own glacial lake. Mauna Kea's nearest neighbor is Mauna Loa (or "Long Mountain"), creator of one-sixth of the island; it's the largest volcano on earth, rising 30,000 feet (9,144m) out of the ocean floor (of course, you can see only the 13,796 ft. that are above sea level). Erupting Kilauea makes the Big Island bigger every day--and, if you're lucky and your timing is good, you can stand just a few feet away and watch it do its work. (In just a week, Kilauea volcano can produce enough lava to fill the Astrodome.)

Steeped in tradition and shrouded in the primal mist of creation, the Big Island called to the Polynesians across 2,000 miles (3,200km) of open ocean. In fact, ancient Hawaiian chants talk about a great burning in the night skies that guided the sojourners to the land of volcanoes. The Big Island radiates what the Hawaiians call mana, a sense of spirituality that's still apparent through the acres of petroglyphs etched in the black lava, the numerous heiau (ancient temples), burial caves scattered in the cliffs, sacred shrines both on land and in the sea, and even in the sound the wind makes as it blows across the desolate lava fields.

The Big Island is not for everyone, however. It refuses to fit the stereotype of a tropical island. Some tourists are taken aback at the sight of stark fields of lava or black-sand beaches. You must remember that it's big (expect to do lots of driving). And you may have to go out of your way if you're looking for traditional tropical beauty, such as a quintessential white-sand beach.

On the other hand, if you're into watersports, this is paradise. The two tall volcanoes mean 350 days of calm water on the leeward side. The underwater landscape of caves, cliffs, and tunnels attracts a stunning array of colorful marine life just waiting to be visited by divers and snorkelers. The island's west coast is one of the best destinations in the world for big-game fishing. And its miles of remote coastline are a kayaker's dream of caves, secluded coves, and crescent-shaped beaches reachable only by sea.

On land, hikers, bikers, and horseback riders can head up and down a volcano, across black-sand beaches, into remote valleys, and through rain forests without seeing another soul. Bird-watchers are rewarded with sightings of the rare, rapidly dwindling native birds of Hawaii. Golfers can find nirvana on top championship courses, less-crowded municipal courses, and even some unusual off-the-beaten-track choices.

This is the least-explored island in the Hawaiian chain, but if you're looking to get away from it all and back to nature in its most primal state, that might be the best thing of all about it. Where else can you witness fiery creation and swim with dolphins; ponder the stars from the world's tallest mountain and catch a blue marlin; downhill ski and surf the waves in a single day? You can do all this, and more, on only one island in the world: the Big Island of Hawaii.

MAUI

Maui is home to the famous Mercedes Tournament for all of the golf fans. With numerous golf courses, excellent restaurants, beautiful beaches, and a variety of accommodations, this island is no ka oi (the best)! Maui offers seclusion as well as a night life. It is not as commercially developed as Oahu, but developed enough so that you'll never be bored. It all depends on what you want. You can stay in Hana where it is truly "heavenly." It is Hawaii in its truest form, offering a peaceful, restful escape. The West Side is a bit busier than the South Shore, and wonderful for families. The South Shore offers more of a "resort feel," and is a bit drier than the West Side. Upcountry is beautiful and windy enough to keep the kite and wind surfers happy.

KAUAI

Kauai is the lush garden isle, with natural beauty everywhere. The South Shore is drier than the North Shore. The prettiest sunsets can be seen from Ke'e Beach on the North Shore, and Baby Beach or in front of the Beach House Restaurant on the South Shore. Don't let the occasional rain showers keep you away...remember, without rain, there wouldn't be rainbows!

Frommer's says the following:

Kauai's three main resort areas, where nearly all the island's accommodations are located, are all quite different in climate, price, and type of accommodations offered, but it's a wide, wonderful range. On the south shore, dry and sunny Poipu is anchored by perfect beaches. This is the place to stay if you like the ocean, watersports, and plenty of sunshine. The Coconut Coast, on the east coast of Kauai, has the most condos, shops, and traffic--it's where all the action is. Hanalei, up on the North Shore, is rainy, lush, and quiet, with spectacular beaches and deep wilderness. Because of its remote location, the North Shore is a great place to get away from it all--but not a great place from which to explore the rest of the island.

Lihue & Environs--Lihue is where most visitors first set foot on the island. This red-dirt farm town, the county seat, was founded by sugar planters and populated by descendants of Filipino and Japanese cane cutters. It's a plain and simple place, with used-car lots and mom-and-pop shops. It's also the source of bargains: inexpensive lodging, great deals on dining, and some terrific shopping buys. One of the island's most beautiful beaches, Kalapaki Beach, is just next door at Nawiliwili, by the island's main harbor.

The Poipu Resort Area--Poipu Beach--On Kauai's sun-soaked south shore, this is a pleasant if sleepy resort destination of low-rise hotels set on gold-sand pocket beaches. Well-done, master-planned Poipu is Kauai's most popular resort, with the widest variety of accommodations, from luxury hotels to B&Bs and condos. It offers 36 holes of golf, 38 tennis courts, and outstanding restaurants. This is a great place for watersports, and a good base from which to tour the rest of Kauai. The only drawback is that the North Shore is about 1 to 1 1/2 hours away.

Koloa--This tiny old town of gaily painted sugar shacks just inland from Poipu Beach is where the Hawaiian sugar industry was born more than a century and a half ago. The mill is closed, but this showcase plantation town lives on as a tourist attraction, with delightful shops, an old general store, and a vintage Texaco gas station with a 1930s Model A truck in place, just like in the good old days.

Kahaleo/Lawai--Just a short 10- to 15-minute drive inland from the beach at Poipu lie the more residential communities of Lawai and Kalaheo. Quiet subdivisions line the streets, restaurants catering to locals dot the area, and life revolves around family and work. Good bargains on B&Bs and a handful of reasonably priced restaurants can be found here.

Western Kauai--This region, west of Poipu, is more remote than its eastern neighbor and lacks its terrific beaches. But it's home to one of Hawaii's most spectacular natural wonders, Waimea Canyon (the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific"); and farther upland and inland, one of its best parks, Kokee State Park.

Hanapepe--For a quick trip back in time, turn off Highway 50 at Hanapepe, once one of Kauai's biggest towns. Founded by Chinese rice farmers, it's so picturesque that it was used as a backdrop for the miniseries The Thornbirds. Hanapepe makes a good rest stop on the way to or from Waimea Canyon. It has galleries selling antiques as well as local art and crafts, including Georgio's surfboard art and coconut-grams. It's also home to one of the best restaurants on Kauai, the Hanapepe Cafe & Espresso Bar. Nearby, at Salt Pond Beach Park, Hawaiians since the 17th century have dried a reddish sea salt in shallow, red-clay pans. This is a great place to swim, snorkel, and--maybe--observe an ancient industry still in practice.

Waimea--This little coastal town, the original capital of Kauai, seems to have quit the march of time. Dogs sleep in the street while old pickups rust in front yards. The ambience is definitely laid-back. A stay in Waimea is peaceful and quiet (especially at the Waimea Plantation Cottages on the beach), but the remote location means this isn't the best base if you want to explore the other regions of Kauai, such as the North Shore, without a lot of driving.

On his search for the Northwest Passage in 1778, British explorer Capt. James Cook dropped anchor at Waimea and discovered a sleepy village of grass shacks. In 1815, the Russians arrived and built a fort here (now a national historic landmark), but they didn't last long: A scoundrel named George Anton Scheffer tried to claim Kauai for Russia, but he was exposed as an impostor and expelled by King Kamehameha I.

Today, even Waimea's historic relics are spare and simple: a statue of Cook alongside a bas-relief of his ships, the rubble foundation of the Russian fort, and the remains of an ancient aqueduct unlike any other in the Pacific. Except for an overabundance of churches for a town this size, there's no sign that Waimea was selected as the first landing site of missionaries in 1820.

The Coconut Coast--The eastern shore of Kauai north of Lihue is a jumble of commerce and condos strung along the coast road named for Prince Kuhio, with several small beaches beyond. Almost anything you need, and a lot of stuff you can live without, can be found along this coast, which is known for its hundreds of coconut trees waving in the breeze. It's popular with budget travelers because of the myriad B&Bs and affordable hotels and condos to choose from, and it offers great restaurants and the island's major shopping areas.

Kapaa--The center of commerce on the east coast and the capital of the Coconut Coast condo-and-hotel district, this restored plantation town looks just like an antique. False-front wooden stores line both sides of the highway; it looks as though they've been here forever--until you notice the fresh paint and new roofs and realize that everything has been rebuilt since Hurricane Iniki smacked the town flat in 1992. Kapaa has made an amazing comeback without losing its funky charm.

The North Shore--Kauai's North Shore may be the most beautiful place in Hawaii. Exotic seabirds, a half-moon bay, jagged peaks soaring into the clouds, and a mighty wilderness lie around the bend from the Coconut Coast, just beyond a series of one-lane bridges traversing the tail ends of waterfalls. There's only one road in and out, and only two towns, Hanalei and Kilauea--the former by the sea, the latter on a lighthouse cliff that's home to a bird preserve. Sun seekers may fret about all the rainy days, but Princeville Resort offers elegant shelter and two golf courses where you can play through rainbows.

Kilauea--This village is home to an antique lighthouse, tropical-fruit stands, little stone houses, and Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, a wonderful seabird preserve. The rolling hills and sea cliffs are hideaways for the rich and famous, including Bette Midler and Sylvester Stallone. The village itself has its charms: The 1892 Kong Lung Company, Kauai's oldest general store, sells antiques, art, and crafts; and you can order a jazzy Billie Holiday Pizza to go at Kilauea Bakery and Pau Hana Pizza.

Anini Beach--This little-known residential district on a 2-mile (3km) reef (the biggest on Kauai) offers the safest swimming and snorkeling on the island. A great beach park is open to campers and day-trippers, and there's a boat ramp where locals launch sampans to fish for tuna. On Sundays, there's polo in the park and the sizzle of barbecue on the green. Several residents host guests in nearby B&Bs.

Princeville--A little overwhelming for Kauai's wild North Shore, Princeville Resort is Kauai's biggest project, an 11,000-acre (4,452ha) development set on a high plain overlooking Hanalei Bay. This resort community includes a luxury Sheraton hotel, 10 condo complexes, new timeshare units around two championship golf courses, cliff-side access to pocket beaches, and one B&B right on the golf course.

Hanalei--Picture-postcard Hanalei is the laid-back center of North Shore life and an escapist's dream; it's also the gateway to the wild Na Pali Coast. Hanalei is the last great place on Kauai yet to face the developer's blade of progress. At Hanalei Bay, sloops anchor and surfers play year-round. The 2-mile- (3km) long crescent beach, the biggest indentation on Kauai's coast, is ideal for kids in summer, when the wild surf turns placid. Hanalei still retains the essence of its original sleepy, end-of-the-road charm. On either side of two-lane Kuhio Highway, you'll find just enough shops and restaurants to sustain you for a week's visit--unless you're a hiker, surfer, or sailor, or have some other preoccupation that just might keep you here the rest of your life.

Haena--Emerald-green Haena isn't a town or a beach but an ancient Hawaiian district, a place of exceptional natural beauty and the gateway to the Na Pali Coast. It's the perfect tropical escape, and everybody knows it: Old house foundations and temples, now covered by jungle, lie in the shadow of new million-dollar homes of movie stars and musicians like Jeff Bridges and Graham Nash. This idyllic, 4-mile (6.5km) coast has lagoons, bays, great beaches, spectacular snorkeling, a botanical garden, and the only North Shore resort that's right on the sand, the Hanalei Colony Resort.

The Na Pali Coast--The road comes to an end, and now it begins: the Hawaii you've been dreaming about. Kauai's Na Pali Coast (na pali means "the cliffs") is a place of extreme beauty and Hawaii's last true wilderness. Its majestic splendor will forever remain unspoiled because no road will ever traverse it. You can enter this state park only on foot or by sea. Serious hikers--and we mean very serious--tackle the ancient 11-mile (18km) long trail down the forbidding coast to Kalalau Valley. The lone, thin trail that creases these cliffs isn't for the faint of heart or anyone afraid of heights. Those of us who aren't up to it can explore the wild coast in an inflatable rubber Zodiac, a billowing sailboat, a high-powered catamaran, or a hovering helicopter, which takes you for the ride of your life.

LANAI

Frommer's says: Lanai is not an easy place to reach. There are no direct flights from the mainland. It's almost as if this quiet, gentle oasis--known, paradoxically, for both its small-town feel and its celebrity appeal--demands that its visitors go to great lengths to get here in order to ensure that they will appreciate it.

Lanai (pronounced lah-nigh-ee), the nation's biggest defunct pineapple patch, now claims to be one of the world's top tropical destinations. It's a bold claim, since so little is here. Don't expect a lot of dining or accommodations choices (Lanai has even fewer than Molokai). There are no stoplights here and barely 30 miles (48km) of paved road. This almost virgin island is unspoiled by what passes for progress, except for a tiny 1920s-era plantation village--and, of course, the village's fancy new arrivals: two first-class luxury hotels where room rates hover around $400 a night.

As soon as you arrive on Lanai, you'll feel the small-town coziness. People wave to every car; residents stop to "talk story" with their friends; fishing and working in the garden are considered priorities in life; and leaving the keys in the car's ignition is standard practice.

For generations, Lanai was little more than a small village, owned and operated by the pineapple company, surrounded by acres of pineapple fields. The few visitors to the island were either relatives of the mainly Filipino residents or occasional weekend hunters. Life in the 1960s was pretty much the same as in the 1930s. But all that changed in 1990, when the Lodge at Koele, a 102-room hotel resembling an opulent English Tudor mansion, opened its doors, followed a year later by the 250-room Manele Bay Hotel, a Mediterranean-style luxury resort overlooking Hulopoe Bay. Overnight, the isolated island was transformed: Corporate jets streamed into the tiny Lanai Airport, former plantation workers were retrained in the art of serving gourmet meals, and the population of 2,500 swelled with transient visitors and outsiders coming to work in the island's new hospitality industry. Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates chose the island for his lavish wedding, buying up all of its hotel rooms to fend off the press--and uncomplicated Lanai went on the map as a vacation spot for the rich and powerful.

But this island is also a place where people come looking for dramatic beauty, quiet, solitude, and an experience with nature away from the bright lights of Waikiki, the publicity of Maui, and the hoopla surrounding most resorts. The sojourners who find their way to Lanai come seeking the dramatic views, the tropical fusion of stars at night, and the chance to be alone with the elements.

They also come for the wealth of activities: snorkeling and swimming in the marine preserve known as Hulopoe Bay; hiking on 100 miles (161km) of remote trails; talking story with the friendly locals; and beachcombing and whale-watching along stretches of otherwise deserted sand. For the adventurous, there's horseback riding in the forest, scuba diving in caves, playing golf on courses with stunning ocean views, or renting a four-wheel-drive vehicle for the day and discovering wild plains where spotted deer run free.

In a single decade, a plain red-dirt pineapple patch has become one of Hawaii's top fantasy destinations. But the real Lanai is a multifaceted place that's so much more than a luxury resort--and it's the traveler who comes to discover the island's natural wonders, local lifestyle, and other inherent joys who's bound to have the most genuine island experience.

MOLOKAI

Frommer's says:

Born of volcanic eruptions 1 1/2 million years ago, Molokai remains a time capsule at the beginning of the 21st century. It has no deluxe resorts, no stoplights, and no buildings taller than a coconut tree. Fortunately for adventure travelers and peace seekers, Molokai is the least developed, most "Hawaiian" of all the islands.

Molokai lives up to its reputation as the most Hawaiian place chiefly through its lineage; there are more people here of Hawaiian blood than anywhere else. This slipper-shaped island was the cradle of Hawaiian dance (the hula was born here) and the ancient science of aquaculture. An aura of ancient mysticism clings to the land here, and the old ways still govern life. The residents survive by taking fish from the sea and hunting wild pigs and axis deer on the range. Some folks still catch fish in throw nets and troll the reef for squid.

Modern Hawaii's high-rise hotels, shopping centers, and other trappings of tourism haven't been able to gain a foothold here; one lone low-rise resort, Kaluakoi, built more than 25 years ago, is Molokai's token attempt at contemporary tourism. The only "new" developments since Kaluakoi are the Molokai Ranch's ecotourism project of pricey camping in semipermanent "tentalows" (a combination of a bungalow and a tent) and an upscale 22-room lodge on the 53,000-acre (21,448-hectare) ranch, now managed by Sheraton. The focus of both is on outdoor recreation and adventure, with all the comforts of home.

The slow-paced, simple life of the people and the absence of contemporary landmarks attract those in search of the "real" Hawaii. But what makes these visitors stand in awe is this little island's diverse natural wonders: Hawaii's highest waterfall and greatest collection of fish ponds, the world's tallest sea cliffs, sand dunes, coral reefs, rain forests, hidden coves, and gloriously empty beaches.

How to select your wedding location

HOW TO SELECT YOUR WEDDING LOCATION...

If you could paint a photo of your wedding, what would it look like? Would it be outside in a garden setting with plentiful amounts of candles and flowers? Would it be on an oceanfront lawn echoing the sounds and swaying of the tall palms? How many guests will celebrate with you? Will they dress in casual wear, resort wear, Aloha wear, formal wear, or black tie? The possibilities for a location seem almost endless. The basics to consider are: indoors or outdoors (it's advisable to have an indoor backup location for outdoor weddings or use a tent), church, chapel, temple, tropical garden, gazebo, waterfall site, private estate, public beach, public park, resort/hotel, restaurant grounds, or a boat. When making your decision, definitely think about the weather conditions for your desired island, and find out what location can accommodate the size of your wedding. Other things to consider are site fees, travel fees that professionals may charge, amount of floral decoration, and accessibility. It is best to figure out where on the island you want to stay, then select a wedding location that is near your accommodations. For example, if you want to get married on Maui, and you want to stay at a resort in Wailea, it is not in your best interest to plan a wedding in Lahaina. They are approximately 1 hour apart, and anything can happen on the highway to prohibit access or delay access to your wedding site. If you want to have a reception with music and dancing, make sure your wedding location permits that. Many locations have noise restrictions, so it is wise to make sure what the rules are before making your decision. If you decide to rent a private home for your event, keep in mind that you will be responsible for the payment/rental of tables, chairs, linens, glassware, flatware, dishes, servers, a caterer, etc. If you decide to use a hotel or restaurant as your event location, keep in mind that most do not permit outside food or beverages, meaning you cannot bring in your own food, drinks, or wedding cake. What is a "Hawaiian style" wedding?

The modern Hawaiian wedding is usually a combination of Hawaiian and Christian traditions. Part of the ceremony is in English, and part of it is in Hawaiian. In addition, the bride and groom perform the lei exchange ceremony. There are many other traditions that the officiant can explain to you when you discuss the specifics of your ceremony. We like to add a very special Hawaiian touch to our Hawaiian ceremonies, but only as much as our clients desire. We can add any of the following services to your wedding to make it a more traditional Hawaiian wedding, appreciating all elements of the culture.

Following the pronouncement of the couple, the Torch Maiden will perform the Tahitian Otea to celebrate the the couple's first appearance as husband and wife.

How to Hawaiianize your name:
There are two ways to determine the Hawaiian equivalent of your name. The first is to determine the meaning of your name and then obtain the Hawaiian word for that meaning. The second, and the most common, is by the process of transliteration -- that is, to replace the letters in the English name with Hawaiian letters. This is not so easy since, as noted above, Hawaiian only has twelve letters.

So here is the formula:

Replace B, F, P with P
Replace C, D, G, J, K, Q, S, T, X, Z with K
Replace H with H
Replace N with N
Replace L, R with L
Replace V, W with W
Replace Y with I

Vowels remain the same. Also be sure to separate all consonants with a vowel. For example, Barbara would be PALAPALA because there must be a vowel between the "r" and "b" in Barbara.

Eco-friendly, green wedding are a wonderful trend where the couple decides to decrease their wedding's impact on the planet. and you can incorporate "green" into your wedding day at any level. Below are some ideas and resources for your "green" or eco-friendly wedding. It is not necessary to go overboard and create a completely eco-friendly wedding if that is not your lifestyle, but every minor contribution helps.

*Recycle products (cans, glass bottles, plastic bottles and bags) used at your wedding.

*Print notes on recycled paper.

*Use caterers who cook with organic foods.

*Shuttle your guests or encourage carpools to reduce the amount of cars used.

*Minimize transportation by holding your ceremony and reception in the same location.

*Use LED lights.

*Donate your food and/or flowers to hospitals, churches, shelters, etc.

*Reuse your flowers for your events following your wedding, such as the day-after brunch or in your hostess suite.

When you see a wedding venue transition from a blank palette to a beautiful, picturesque celebration, it is easy to see the parts that make the whole. You get to see the before and after, which can be enhanced with the ease of linen. Linen changes a room into something fantastic and impressive.

Most of the time, banquet facilities (including hotels, resorts, reception halls, &restaurants) entice you with linen covered chairs and fancy table linens to attract you to their venue. However, keep in mind that those are usually EXTRAS. Typically the chairs are unattractive, overused, and uncovered, and the table linens are VERY basic. It is not necessary to rent new chairs for the room. In fact, you can help your photographer by creating a colorful display at your reception. Chair décor is not what it used to be. It has evolved into an industry unto itself.
There are many styles of chair covers and many sash tying techniques. It is wedding fashion!

The ease and convenience of renting the covers and sashes from a company means they set it up, they take them down, and they clean the items. Some couples prefer to purchase their own (either from linen companies or from web sites where brides sell their wedding linens) and hire someone to set them up.

What to consider for your beach wedding

When people think of Hawaii, they think of beautiful beaches. Many wedding magazines display beautiful photos of beach weddings that inspire brides and grooms to follow the beach wedding trend. Beaches in Hawaii are handled a bit differently from beaches elsewhere. Most beaches are government property, even those fronting Hawaii's hotels and resorts. They are not private and people will be frolicking on the beach, even during your wedding. Most people are respectful, but they cannot be forced away from your site. However, rules and restrictions apply, so be sure to learn about those before planning your wedding on a public beach. Although beach weddings present special issues that you would not normally consider at a traditional wedding venue, careful preparation and planning will help to eliminate any unpleasant surprises that may occur otherwise. We hope this proves to be a helpful resource to create a beautiful and joyous beach wedding experience..

COSTS:

Sometimes a beach wedding can be less expensive than a traditional wedding. Be sure to collect estimates for both scenarios and compare. It may be necessary to pay additional delivery fees, permit fees, and set up fees. It is best to select a beach that offers a pavilion or similar structure that will shelter your food and guests at your wedding. Most rental companies will not set up tents on the sand. However, they will set up tents at beach parks on the grassy area, if the government permits it. Keep in mind that you will need to provide lighting, which may require the rental of generators for electricity. You can use tiki torches, but the tropical winds may keep them from staying lit. Battery operated lighting works wonders at a beach setting.

TONE OF YOUR WEDDING:

A beach wedding can be a casual affair. It allows everyone to relax. Your guests can dress comfortably and affordably. A beach wedding allows you to involve everyone in the activities. Guests are not restricted to sitting quietly in their seats.

CONVENIENCE:

The ceremony and reception can all be held right there on the beach. No need to travel to different locations. This is very convenient for everyone. If you decide to have children at your wedding, Check to see if parking and bathroom facilities are available. Note how accessible they are from your wedding location.

CREATIVITY:

A beach wedding provides an opportunity to be creative with your wedding theme and setting. Some of our clients have incorporated a very casual beach theme involving flip flops for all of the guests as favors, beach balls, a volleyball game, and a clambake. Others have created a simple elegance of flowing fabric and lighting. Your budget will determine just how far you can go with your creative visions. Your wedding coordinator will help you adjust your budget to accommodate your beach wedding dreams.

Timing

The beaches and beach parks are very popular venues, so make sure that other events are not taking place at your wedding location. It is best to have your wedding on a Hawaiian beach on a weekday, when locals are not using it for their family picnics, barbecues, and fishing adventures. A little tip: when vacationing in Hawaii, every day is a weekend day for you. Also, many wedding professionals charge less for their services on a weekday. Be sure to check the tide chart so that you set up at an appropriate distance. You certainly do not want the unanticipated waves to wash away your wedding. Lighting will affect your photography and your guests' comfort. Check where the sun will be at the time of your wedding. It is in your best interest to make sure there is shade to protect your guests and food by providing beach umbrellas, parasols, canopies, tents, and/or hold the event in the beach's pavilion. Perhaps there is a cluster of shady trees under which you can have the ceremony. We discourage receptions under the trees due to the amount of uninvited creatures that will be using them, as well.

WEATHER/BACK UP PLAN:

Hawaii is a wondrous tropical paradise, complete with lush green mountains, an abundance of flowers and plant growth, and tall swaying palms. This is part of what attracts us to the islands to get married. Unfortunately, the rain that is required to maintain this beauty may cause some disappointment on your wedding day if you are not adequately prepared. The most important thing to remember when planning a beach wedding is that you have a PLAN B.

OTHER PRODUCTS OF NATURE:

Be prepared for the wind to blow sand around, so protect your guests and your food. The wind and crashing waves may also make it difficult for the guests to hear the most important element of your wedding---the ceremony. Be sure to ask your coordinator and involved wedding professionals for advice regarding sound for the guests and for your video. The seagulls and other uninvited creatures might be interested in your wedding events, as well, so be prepared. Perhaps some citronella torches and candles to keep away the mosquitoes?? You may also want to supply sunscreen and bug repellant for your guests. Keep garbage cans on the outside perimeter of the wedding site so that the creatures stay away from the actual festivities.

RULES TO FOLLOW:

Make sure you check with the parks and recreation department regarding the rules and regulations of the beach location of your wedding. Ask about the following: Can you have candles on the beach? Can you play music into the night? How late can you stay? Is there an area nearby for open fires should you choose to barbeque? Can you set up a tent and rentals (tables, chairs, etc.)? Are you permitted to section off an area? What type of beverages can be served? Is glass permitted, or is plastic required?

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:

Chairs may sink in the sand if you do not rent flooring to place under them. However, if you are planning a "beach blanket" reception, you will not need chairs. It is also important to consider the needs of your guests with special needs. Plan for their safety and comfort. You will need to provide them with chairs and beach umbrellas to protect them from the elements. They will also need assistance accessing the wedding site and facilities. Be sure to keep an abundant supply of water and beverages to keep hydrated. Keep a first aid kit on hand to assist the adventurers and explorers at your wedding. There are many shells and pieces of coral and lava that can easily cause injury.

The most important item to consider is that you should go with the flow of the day. Regardless of the extensive preparations you consider and put into effect, unexpected things will take place. Just treat these wedding imperfections as memories instead of mistakes. Enjoy and cherish every moment of this very special day! Selecting your wedding photographer is one of the most essential parts of your wedding planning process. Although many couples are budget conscious, it is imperative to consider more than the photographer’s packages or fees when researching and deciding on who will document your milestone celebration. Think about it…would you select your doctor based on the his/her cheapest fees? Of course not! You would consider the professional’s years of experience, how s/he relates to patients and peers, the type of equipment used, the hospital of affiliation, etc. That is how you should think of your photographer…a quality professional using quality equipment, who affiliates with reputable people and organization, has years of experience, and clicks with your personality. You can only capture the moments of your wedding day once…so make sure you choose the right photographer to capture and preserve the memories of your event.

Here are some tips on being an educated shopper for your wedding photographer:

*The Internet and local phone book are excellent resources to start shopping. Also ask your friends and family for recommendations.

* Anyone can design a great web site, so, if you can meet with the photographer in person, try to look through various albums and portfolios. On Hawaii there is a place called the Wedding Café, where some photographers keep sample albums for couples to review at their convenience. If your hometown has a place like that, take advantage of it.

*When looking at a photographer’s portfolio and sample photos, be sure to examine the photographer’s style. Does the style seem to capture the emotions of the people? Are the shots posed? Is there an artistic edge to the photographer’s style? Are the photos more traditional? What is the photographer’s signature shot or style? Some key words include photojournalism, candids, portraits, groups, etc.

*How much time coverage do you want of your event? Do you want photos taken of you getting ready? Do you want coverage of your ceremony and/or reception?

*What is your rapport like with the photographer? Does s/he seem to speak freely with you and make you feel at ease? Is the presentation very structured and impersonal? Does s/he seem helpful about offering photography tips regarding your wedding location or time of day? Did people look relaxed in the photos you viewed?

*What type of equipment is used? How are photos processed?

*Does the photographer attend workshops, conferences, classes, etc. to stay up to date on new photo techniques and equipment?

*How many years has your photographer been specializing in weddings? What type of photography did s/he do before weddings? What does s/he like about being a wedding photographer? Will the main/primary photographer shoot the wedding, or will there be a secondary photographer to take photos? How many photographers are included in the price/package?

*What services are included in the package? Will there be a CD/DVD of high resolution photos (“the rights”) included in your package? Will all of the photos taken be on it? Will there be an Internet viewing of your photos for people to see and order photos? Will photos be edited? What is the turnaround time? Is an album included? If so, learn the different types offered. What is the cost for any over-time charges? Is there a proof album? Are there special items or services that they offer that others do not offer?

*What is the backup plan if the photographer is unable to make it to the wedding? What happens if the photographer is out of business when your wedding date arrives? Is the photographer insured? Is there another memory tool of the photos if the memory card is damaged or lost? Are the photos backed up? Is the photographer insured? Are there unresolved issues with the Better Business Bureau?

*Ask the photographer how his /her approach to your wedding photos would differ from other weddings photographed.

*Ask for references and actually call or email them regarding their experiences with the photographer.

*Make sure you understand the payment policy and any contractual obligations.

*What happens if your wedding date needs to be changed? What is the cancellation policy?

***Your photographer should not be your minister, wedding planner, florist, DJ, or any other professional position in your wedding. For quality professional photography, your photographer should ONLY be a professional photographer and not a person with any other responsibilities.

Planning Your Wedding: Where to begin

WHERE DO I BEGIN?????

Congratulations, you have just become engaged to your soul-mate
! Once the excitement of that calms down a bit, the reality of the wedding planning details begin to overwhelm you. The question most commonly asked by the couple is, "Where do I begin?"
Hopefully, the information we have gathered and composed for you will serve as a helpful resource. Hiring a wedding planner is super important because we know how to handle all of the details, including the important ones that are not considered by the couple until it is too late. We may also be able to obtain some discounts for you that you would not ordinarily be able to get on your own. Most importantly, we think of EVERYTHING and handle ALL of the elements of the wedding day. One of the biggest mistakes brides say they make is NOT hiring a wedding coordinator to handle the many details and problems that occur on the day of, including vendors and guests calling for information and confirmation.
Information about your budget is listed below. But, it is VERY important to remember the following: EVERY ISLAND and EVERY VENDOR and EVERY LOCATION is priced differently. We cannot just give prices on the phone for everything, as there is just too much information to consider. To maintain our professionalism, we are happy to receive a detailed request and provide one estimate before we are hired. Professional coordinators work diligently with their contracted clients regarding ALL of the details, including information about the location options, professionals, suggestions, resources, ways to save money, etc. But, this is not something a professional coordinator provides at no cost to couples who are not yet contracted, as that information takes time to collect and update, and is a part of the service offered.
So, please consider the information on this page, create some sort of vision of your wedding in your mind, and come up with a budget that can be flexible. A wedding in Hawaii is not cheaper than a wedding on the mainland because it costs less; it is only cheaper for you because you typically have fewer guests and a less elaborate wedding on the islands than you would at home. It is our expertise that will guide you, our client, through the planning details and ways to work within your budget. For example, it is not realistic to plan a ceremony and reception for 40 guests at a private location, including officiant, location, coordination, flowers, entertainment, catering, decor, rentals, etc. on a budget of $5000. Does that mean you cannot get married in Hawaii? We say no. We say it means you need to adjust your wedding plans to accommodate your budget, or adjust your budget to accommodate the plans that you want. We hope the information is helpful! Happy reading!

Here is a list of some things to consider when beginning your wedding planning:
Your Wedding Style You must think very early in the process about what style of wedding you want, and how formal or informal an affair it will be. Although your wedding will be in Hawaii, do you want a Hawaiian wedding, a traditional wedding in Hawaii, or a combination of the two? Is this going to be a casual affair with Aloha wear and flip flops, or is this going to be a more formal affair with cocktail dresses and suits/tuxedos? This decision sets a tone for the entire wedding, and all decisions will be related to this choice. The tone of your wedding begins with your invitation, so it is important to decide how you want to convey your wedding style. The style and formality of the wedding will also influence your decisions about your attendants' attire, your wedding decor, and presentation. The time of day that you hold your wedding ceremony and reception may also affect the level of formality that you select. For example, a morning wedding and brunch reception will have a more casual style than an evening ceremony and reception.
Type of Wedding Reception How casual or formal do you see your reception? Deciding your food service is important because it affects so many other decisions you will make regarding your reception, including the amount of staff you will need, the additional decor, the physical arrangement/floor plan, and more. Do you see tray-passed hors d'oeuvres and a plated meal , food stations, or a buffet? The next item to consider is if the wedding will be indoors or outdoors. If it is outdoors, it is important to have an indoor back up or tent the outside. The weather, especially in Hawaii, is highly unpredictable. Although it is clear one moment, a passing shower can destroy a wedding exposed to the elements. What type of entertainment do you want? Do you need a dance floor? Will children be included in the wedding festivities? These preferences dictate the type of setting you will choose for your reception and may increase or reduce certain limitations involved with the reception facility (whether or not they provide food, service, etc). Use the explanation below to assist you with determining the type of reception you desire.

If you have determined the time and style of your wedding, and considered the number of guests and size of your budget, you probably have a good idea of the type of wedding reception that will suit your needs and desired. Listed below are the various types of wedding receptions.
Morning
A breakfast or brunch wedding reception is nice following a morning wedding ceremony at 9 or 10 a.m. This may be served buffet style, or guests may be seated at specified tables. If you choose buffet style, an assortment of fresh fruit, croissants, rolls and quiches, with a variety of cold cuts and cheeses are nice. Hot coffee, tea and fresh fruit juice should be served. With sit-down breakfast you may want to start with fresh juice and fruit, then serve an omelet or Eggs Benedict with toast or rolls for the entree. Hot coffee and tea are a must. Pastries or a wedding cake would be served. Serving alcoholic beverages is optional, but may include champagne, champagne punch, wine, screwdrivers or Bloody Marys.
Luncheon
These are similar to brunch wedding receptions and may be either sit-down or buffet style. They generally follow a late morning or high noon ceremony and are served between 12 and 2 p.m. Buffet luncheons may include a variety of salads, such as; potato, fruit, chicken, pasta or vegetables with dip. Poached salmon and shrimp are popular, but expensive. Sandwiches, cold cuts, and cheeses are often served, and are relatively inexpensive. Your reception coordinator or caterer will have suggestions, according to your budget.

Sit-down luncheons may be started by serving champagne, cocktails, and hors d'oeuvres while guests go through the receiving line. Once the guests are seated, a white wine may be served with soup or salad to start. Then boned breast of chicken, a chicken crepe or beef entrée with rice and vegetables is nice.

Serve coffee or tea with the wedding cake. Having espresso/cappuccino bar, or offering chocolate cups filled with cordials adds a nice touch.
Tea or cocktail
Tea receptions are generally held between 2:00 and 5:00 p.m., usually starting no later than 3:30 p.m. Coffee, tea or punch, both with and without champagne or wine, are generally served. Tea sandwiches or other finger food, along with wedding cake, are the basic requirement.

This type of wedding reception is the least expensive to have, and perfect when there is a large guest list and a small budget. If held in a home or garden, this type of reception will cut down on rentals. Cocktail wedding receptions are held between 4:00 and 7:30 p.m. If only cocktails are being served, with no dinner to follow, the wedding reception should start by 5:30 or 6:00 p.m. at the latest.

Usually champagne, wine punch or beer are served and in many cases there is an open bar, depending on the budget. Hot and cold hors d'oeuvres may be passes or set out on buffet tables.
Dinner
A dinner wedding reception is usually started sometime between 6:00 and 9:00 p.m. In many cases cocktails and hors d'oeuvres are served in the first hour, with a sit-down or buffet dinner following. Such cocktail service will add to your expenses. (To keep expenses down, offer wine and beer rather than a full bar.) A cocktail hour of some kind gives people time to go through the receiving line and mingle with friends, especially when a sit-down dinner follows.
Sit-down
As mentioned before, and quite obviously, this is a party where guests are served at the table. It usually, but not always, has a more formal feeling, and most of the time is preceded by a cocktail hour so the guests can mingle. A sit down wedding reception provides for more organization. It is easier to get the guests attention when the traditional ceremonies, such as cutting the cake, are to begin. On the other hand some people feel the sit-down service tends to quiet a party down, and discourages people from mingling.
Buffet
A buffet wedding reception is one in which the guests serve themselves. They may choose to sit at a table of their choice, or seats may be assigned. The buffet table is arranged with a variety of food and can be either round or oblong, with the food placed around the edge. It may also be rectangular with food served from behind one side, or with food displayed along both sides. The way the tables are arranged will be determined by the area available and the number of guests. Try to avoid making the guests wait in along line. For a larger number of guests have two buffet tables, one at each end of the room.
Food Station
Another idea which is unique and adds to the décor of the area, is what is called food stations. They are smaller buffet tables which are set up around the room, or in different areas of a garden. It is especially nice when each food station has a different theme and type of food. Decorate them with floral displays and unique serving pieces. They will not only look beautiful, but are a fun way for the guests to eat, and will increase the mingling of the guests. Try a beautiful display of cheeses with breads and fresh fruits displayed in baskets, or an ice-carved boat filled with jumbo shrimp and crab legs. Or you may add to this eating adventure a chef carving a roast, serving hot won tons from a wok, or a chicken crepe made right in front of the guests' eyes.

Number of Guests To Invite

This is always the tricky part. If you are like most couples, you are avoiding a large wedding by hosting a destination wedding in Hawaii. Already you have some leverage with your list because people will surely understand your limitations. However, you will still need to draft an A list and a B list. The A list is comprised of the first choice guests, and the B list is comprised of people you want to invite, but can only invite when people from the A list are unable to attend. It is important to know the estimated guest count when selecting your wedding site. Since Hawaii is a desirable place, many of your invited guests will try to turn your wedding into an excuse for a wonderful tropical vacation. So, it is safe to predict at least 50% of your guest list will attend. Since most couples have financial control of their destination weddings, they have a lot of control of the guest list. Typically, however, family members divide the guest list based on the following percentages: the parents of the bride and groom each invite one-third, and the bride and groom invite one-third. Or perhaps one-third each for the bride and the groom, and the parents can invite the rest.

The Dreaded Budget

Once it is determined who will pay for what part of the wedding, the bride & groom can create a budget and allocate the money as they see fit. It is good to have a realistic overall budget, and expect to go a little bit over it. This is one of the areas where your wedding planner will prove to be very helpful. Your wedding coordinator will be able to assist with suggestions that can help you stay within your budget by providing alternative, less-expensive options. You may want to have a credit card that is only used for the wedding costs. This will help you to easily place deposits for your wedding, as well as keep track of your wedding costs.

Some couples find it challenging to determine "who pays for what." Traditionally, the following people are responsible for the costs, but this is all flexible when hosting destination weddings:

The groom's parents pay for their own transportation and lodgings as do out-of-town guests. Parents of the bride and groom may help in securing accommodations for the bridesmaids and ushers in the home of friends, or they may offer to pay any expenses they may care to assume.

Time of Year

This decision is especially important when planning your destination wedding because of costs and weather. It is more expensive to visit Hawaii during the holidays. In addition, the islands are more crowded during popular vacation times, like during the summer when most families are able to travel together. If you are dreaming of an outdoor wedding, then it is important to select a time of year when the weather will me more conducive for that. One of the benefits of a Hawaiian wedding is that an outdoor wedding in Hawaii can happen any time of the year! The time of year will influence your color theme of your wedding. For example, rich fall colors will be more appropriate during the autumn months, even in Hawaii.

These are the elements of your wedding to consider when beginning your wedding planning. The most important decisions to make once you have established your decisions to these basics, reserve your ceremony and reception sites. It will be difficult to hire any professionals until the location(s) is/are determined. There are many other decisions to make along the way, but this will get you started and eliminate some of the overwhelming feelings you may be currently experiencing.

Congratulations! You are engaged and planning one of the most amazing days of your lives! Many couples want to know where to begin, and your wedding planning begins with a BUDGET. We all wish we could have an unlimited budget for our wedding to incorporate all of the elements we want on our wedding day. But, for many couples, this is not a realistic situation. Although budget is the least appealing element of your wedding to confront, it is the most important. Your budget range will influence what you can and cannot do for your wedding day celebration.

Based on research, the average cost of a wedding of 150 guests is approximately $30,000. Needless to say, unless you can call in a lot of favors from friends and family, that budget may not be very realistic in the state of Hawaii.

Before you make any financial commitments, determine the total amount of money you want to spend on your wedding and establish the elements of your wedding that are most important to you both. It is your day, so other people’s opinions should not deter you from doing what is most important to you. Keep in mind that in order to have those important things, it may be necessary to compromise on other areas of your wedding.

My experience is that the most important elements of a successful and fun wedding are your guest list, food/beverage, and entertainment. These are the most memorable parts of your wedding and the first things your guests will discuss afterwards. The photography and videography are important because they capture and document the memories and those special moments that you may not have personally witnessed. Your wedding day will seem like a blurry flash of time, so do not dismiss the importance of reliving the documented moments that represent this special day you have been planning and anticipating. Ambience is very important, so be sure to make your event aesthetically pleasing to your guests and the camera. You don’t need to go over the top; there are ways to make your wedding look fabulous without breaking the bank. Colored fabric and lighting will make your event magical, and your wedding coordinator will be your best resource on how to reduce costs and save you money without compromising your vision of your wedding.

Although tradition says that the bride's parents pay for the whole thing, this is frequently untrue for today's couples. In all likelihood your parents or other relatives may pay for your wedding or contribute a certain amount to it.

Some of the pitfalls in creating a wedding budget include the couple may not realizing how much each vendor will cost, whether there are any hidden fees at the venue or for the professional you are hiring, or they simply forget to build in tax and gratuity into their budget. The values listed here are a guide on what to expect expenses to be. In some cases, there isn't enough money allocated in a category to cover known expenses. Therefore the amounts in other categories need to be reduced, an alternative and less expensive choice needs to be made, and/or more total dollars need to become available. Just know that you will need to have a realistic budget, or be prepared to make some changes to your vision.

Arguing or ruining relations over wedding plans defeats the whole purpose of the actual celebration. Stay positive and keep an optimistic outlook about planning your wedding and the big day itself. Things are bound to go wrong, even with most careful execution. How you deal with it will either make it a positive memory you can laugh about or one that can ruin your day. Only you will know that a detail is overlooked, your guests will have no idea. But, if they see you are stressed and upset, then they will be, too. Their energy will feed off of yours. Keep in mind that even the most expensive or beautiful wedding is meaningless unless you have a great time sharing it with your loved ones. So, have a realistic budget and enjoy every moment of your dream day!

Hawaiian Island Wedding Planners: Photography Worksheet

This photography worksheet will assist the photographer on your wedding day. Most professional wedding photographers know the basics. What they DON’T know are the special shots and with whom you want them. If you want detail shots (photos of the framed signs, décor, wedding programs and menus, wedding favors, and other little touches you have added, then you need to communicate that to them. If there are things at the venue (surfboards, statues, benches, etc.) that you would like to include in your photos, then communicate that to your photographer.

It is important to prioritize the shots if you have purchased a small photo package or minimal photo coverage. If you only have the photographer for a short time, and you want EVERYTHING important photographed (ie. Couple’s entrance, first dance, cake cutting), then you need to schedule those appropriately into the timeline during the time that your photographer is present.

It is extremely helpful if you provide names of the people participating in the shots you have requested. You will only have to list each name once if that person is in multiple shots. It is also helpful to assign a special guest who is not in a lot of photos, and who knows the people who are in the photos, to assist the photographer in getting these people ready for their photo shot. All of these suggestions will help the photography portion of your wedding run smoothly and in a timely manner. This will make the process a lot less stressful for everyone involved.

Tip : Photograph young children as early in the proceedings as possible (before tears, boredom, or naps).

Here are some tips from us regarding your wedding day photography:
1) Have fun with it!
2) Feel free to bring some fun props, like a parasol, a “just married” sign, your favorite book, etc.
3) It is best to have the mess of getting ready in one room, and the getting ready photos in a cleaner, less messy room.
4) Assign a primary contact person to gather the people you need for photos. Remember that your photographer has never met your family and friends, and if they are on your photo shot list, your photographer will need help finding them. Assign a good friend to this task and introduce him/her to the photographer beforehand, so that s/he knows he can ask this friend for help if s/he needs it.
5) Make sure all of your items for your “getting ready” photos are in an area easily accessible for your photographer, including your bouquet (if you arrange for early delivery), your rings, your shoes and dress, etc.
